Song Medicine Sessions: ONE-ON-ONE

These sessions involve all three components, sound healing / music empowerment / and song medicine in a way that bring healing and strength to you and culminate in a song that encapsulates a meaningful message for you to take with you in your heart and even to share with others. We focus on the use of sound, particularly facilitated by the crystal bowl and buffalo drum, to guide us through our feelings and relevant histories as well as to open channels for new insight. We then awaken your indigenous musical self through voice and drumming and, lastly, allow a song to emerge that we create to serve you as a personal healing mantra and also to hold as a proud piece of creative work that was informed by your most authentic experience and your most trusted guidance. Recording and developing ideas birthed in our sessions at home is most welcome. We complete our process with a celebratory performance of your song that can be recorded for future remembrance and enjoyment. Individuals are welcome to do what they please with their song from there.

A complete medicine song process may be fulfilled in 1-2 sessions, but can be most beneficial when 3 or more sessions are dedicated to it. A session is approximately 1 hour and costs $50. Sessions can be held in my space of practice or in your preferred location.

A performance of one of the original songs created by participants in the Sound and Song Medicine Series, 2015, called "I Am Who I Am."

Imagine being part of a movement that has arisen from your own heart and has the music and shared community to give it voice. Imagine an immersive sound healing experience combined with playful and creative group singing.

This is what the Sound and Song Medicine Series is all about. During these six weeks, we will journey through the healing experience of sound and the spiritual power of song, reaping deep benefits from both, and come away with our own repertoire of soul songs we have created as a community.

As a lifelong musician and recently-certified sound healing practitioner, Shireen Amini is most compelled by the mysterious relationship between sound and song as they serve the human experience. During her studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, she began to intuit a method in which melodies, grooves, and eventually songs arose from meditative states and raw expressions of sound, such as free vocalizing. Together with fellow cohort Tasya Herskovitz, Shireen devised a process with four distinct phases that, in themselves, are therapeutic but also can result in musical material that serves as the basis for creating meaningful songs. This process invites participants 1) into an authentic space together, segues into 2) sounding with the voice and a drone, 3) pauses in silence, then 4) brings forward the melodies and grooves that have come as medicine for us, as a response to our soul-felt longings, whether they be for healing, release, joy, or empowerment.

In this series, Shireen will take this process one step further by including the study, both through singing and analysis, of established songs with medicinal characteristics. We all know songs of this nature. They have a way of hooking us into their healing potential. Many are called spirituals or mantras or folk songs. These songs have historically been sung in a group. Shireen believes this type of group singing with aligned purpose is gravely lacking in our culture today. Therefore, in addition to our experiential study, Shireen will direct a playful and intentional group vocal jam in the style of CircleSinging, which she learned from Bobby McFerrin’s protege, Dave Worm. This jam will juice us up for the final, most magical part of our sessions together: the group songwriting process. With use of both intuitive and musical skills, Shireen will hold the group strong to the musical sensibility and messages that will best serve the group as we write. The atmosphere will be inclusive and dynamic. All ideas will be welcome and all voices part of creating these group songs.

By the end of our time together, we will have up to 4 self-written communal songs that tie us to a rich tradition of singing together with shared purpose soulful transcendence and. We will have a renewed relationship to song as an ally in wellness, sustenance, and change for ourselves and the world around us. We will have our own revival music with messages most relevant to us and our times!

No prior musical experience is required and all you will need is your voice and possibly a recording device. If you feel shy about your singing voice, please remember that you will be strengthened and held by many other voices in a safe environment.

Come be part of this first offering of its kind to feed your spirit, deepen your connection to your own voice and community, and bring about positive change in your life and in the world!

Workshop: Sound and Song Medicine Immersion, 1-3 days

A Day of Creating Personally and Communally Meaningful Music
with Shireen Amini

Check EVENTS for upcoming Sound and Song Medicine Immersion opportunities or CONTACT Shireen directly about offering a Sound and Song Medicine Immersion to your community or cause.

• Experience toning, drumming, and singing with a sense of playfulness and purpose
• Learn ancient and modern techniques for empowered musical expression
• Create your own simple medicine songs for healing and change
• Deepen your understanding of the human relationship to music, nature, and community

Music is medicine for the soul, we all know this. However, many of us find our relationship to music-making and our own singing voices to be far from joyful. It’s time to change that. Following the old African proverb, “If you can talk you can sing, if you can walk you can dance,” we will liberate the musical expression that we all inherently carry. You will be offered concepts and practices to empower your musical creativity and anchor in soulful feeling, intuition, and sacred connections with nature. You will be introduced to exciting new understandings of how to bring together the ancient and modern worlds of music for your own personal healing. We will cultivate a sense of safety and freedom as we expand our experience of sound, music, and song in a group setting. These experiences will include group toning, drumming, singing, and movement, all with a sense of purpose and a playful spirit.

You do not need any prior musical experience to participate in this workshop, only a longing to cultivate a more personal and empowered connection with music. For those who may have inhibitions about their sense of pitch or rhythm, this is a perfect environment to step out of your shell due to a principle we call “entrainment,” which basically states that we cannot help but move toward being ‘in tune’ and ‘in time’ when we are surrounded by others who are. Experienced musicians will also find great benefit as they have an opportunity to expand their understanding of the nature of music, sense of playfulness, and discover a deeper sense of purpose in what they do.

The prize takeaway of our time together will be the beginnings of your own personal medicine songs and an experience of group composition, by which we will come up with an original medicine song for our community through a dynamic and inclusive process. A “medicine song” can be described as an energy formula in the form of melody and rhythm (and often times a lyrical message) that comes from outside of us to provide us something that our being needs. This applies to needs on the community level as well. We are all capable of listening to and singing along with songs we love, but in this workshop, we will take it to the next level and have a creative dialogue with the mystical as we bring forward music that moves us and has come for us.

Singing and participation in music is your birthright and it is essential for your well-being. This workshop is about reviving this understanding of music as it may serve life and the highest good. This is not about performance, but rather feeding your spirit in the moment and experiencing a deep sense of unity. Gift yourself with a more empowered relationship to your voice and musical expression and open yourself up to limitless potential for health and joy!
