Grief Ritual (pdx) with Laurence Cole & Shireen Amini

Life has inevitable sorrow, losses, and struggles, named and unnamed, for individuals and for communities.  In many traditional cultures throughout the world, communal settings support the full and wholesome expression of grief.  Unexpressed grief may become toxic, leading to illness, depression, addiction, even damaging and violent behavior towards oneself or others.  Let us support one another in presence and compassionate witnessing.  When we welcome the many faces and forms of grieving, we reweave our belonging.  The sacred ritual container allows our mutual flourishing and interdependence.

Community Grief Ceremony

Community Grief Ceremony

  • Unity Community of Central Oregon (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In life it is necessary to grieve those things that no longer serve us in order to let them go. Grief is a common human emotion that impacts us all. It can come to us through divorce, illness, loss of dreams, conflict, death, change and so much more. Grief is an invitation to feel. It invites us to come into the body to shed light on those things that are ready to be released in order to heal. Because of this, we must have ways to move our pain. Grief needs to be regularly felt and released or it begins to smother our joy, creativity, and our ability to connect with our self and others.

Community Grief Ceremony is a safe way to learn how to lean into grieving within and among community. Communal grieving offers something that we cannot get when we grieve by ourselves. Through validation, acknowledgement and witnessing, communal grieving allows us to experience a level of healing that is deeply and profoundly freeing. Each of us has a basic human right to that genuine love, happiness and freedom.

We aim to create an integrated space rooted in understandings of our historical context and current social realities. No matter your race, gender, sexual orientation, abilities, or housing status, you are not only welcome here, you belong here. It is one of our core values to utilize song to resist societal oppression and support liberation from the inside out.

We are not perfect, but it is our intention to respect and uplift all beings, human and non-human, seen and unseen. If there is a way we can better care for you, your values, and your experience in this space, please let us know.

We hope you will bring the wholeness of who you are to this embodied experience of singing with full permission to be in movement, grief, and laughter.

This particular sing will also be an opportunity to ground out our summer season and step forward into fall. To draw more power and meaning from our gathering, come with a state reflection and soul-felt intention.

Singing Heals Song Circle (Labor Day)

A very special OUTDOOR SINGING CIRCLE featuring Shireen Amini. Music is medicine. Let's Sing, Feel and Heal together in community.

About this event

Let's Sing!

Singing is a unique and powerful tool for healing. For centuries, singing and song have been used to build community, to tell our stories, to honor transitions, to grieve our losses, and to transform despair into hope.

Singing gets us out of our heads and into our bodies, so that we may be soothed, regulated, connected and uplifted. Healing happens in community, and song circles are an accessible and community-based approach to singing. We believe that singing is a birthright. So come join us and experience the innate power of song as medicine.

**No matter your race, gender, sexual orientation, abilities, or housing status, you are not only welcome here, you belong here. We hope you will bring the wholeness of who you are to this embodied experience of singing with full permission to be in movement, grief, laughter and imperfection.

Bring something to sit on and some cozy layers. Come connect with your voice and transform how you feel.

DONATION - sliding scale $10-$40. Your donations will go towards supporting Shireen's mini-tour and continued artistic excellence! NO ONE turned away due to lack of funds.

ACCOUNTABILITY - 10% of proceeds will go to the Amah Mutsun Land Trust. Aptos Beloved Community will generously be matching our donation.

ABOUT SOUL DRUMMING ONLINE

Hand drumming is one of the most effective tools I have personally found for expression, empowerment, joy, and connection. It is ancient. I want to support you in adding this tool to your repertoire! In “soul drumming,” we improve our skills and technique while learning to play with feeling, engaging the rich cultural origins of drums, rhythms, and songs, and connecting meaningfully both with a community of fellows and our own inner resources.

This is a 4-week class series with sessions that build upon each other. Includes weekly 1-hour sessions in a live teaching atmosphere and follow-up videos and materials to assist your practicing after each class. All classes will culminate in a final Zoom performance of the song we have learned over the course of the 4 weeks.

THIS CLASS IS WELCOMING OF ALL, INCLUDING PEOPLE WHO IDENTIFY AS QUEER, TRANS, BLACK, INDIGENOUS, LATINX, POC, OR ANY OTHER MARGINALIZED IDENTITY. IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS OR THERE IS A WAY I CAN SUPPORT A MORE INVITING SPACE FOR YOU, PLEASE CONTACT ME.
